I’m proud to announce Grüün’s first release the “Krauthop EP”, which appears on the venerable iD.EOLOGY netlabel. Grüün is a side-project of mine, focussing on German Hip-Hop.

“When it starts budding and turning green all around, it does not only put a smile on a nature-lover’s face. It also means that it’s about time to get your rooms vented, to take out the trash and to generally spruce up the place.

Seasonably, Grüün a.k.a. Comfort Fit and tide roll up their sleeves and start doing the long-overdue spring-cleaning in the rapgame with their debut release on iD.EOLOGY. Boredom, beat-cliches, mack-attitudes and a lack of imagination they just sweep aside and furbish hip-hop to high shine with their homegrown polish. Complex, refined and trippy, straightfoward and headnoddingly fat, electronically creaky and jazzily dodgy, and mostly all of the above at once are the beats with which Comfort Fit puts the listener on a trip and supports the raps of tide. The latter likes to tell sometimes thoughtful, sometimes entertaining anecdotes from a life inbetween bar, bong and buddhism and, as a side effect, proves that one doesn’t have to be a gangsta to pump out some pretty hard and dynamic flows.

So after all, this is a release for everyone. For everyone who shares our soft spot for individuality and originality. And of course for everyone who knows just how to appreciate good entertainment for heart, mind and balls.”

“If it doesn’t cost anything, it has no value.”, grandma used to say. While we turn our faces into the sun, inhale deeply and our mouths go wide with a placid smile, we have some second thoughts on this statement. Glaring sunshine, clean air and a nice smile, all this comes at zero cost and still, it’s not only vital, it’s what makes life worth living in the first place…

The latest iDEOLOGY release “iD.046 – because best things are free (Edition Hiphop)“, features the previously unreleased Comfort Fit bomb “Sneeze at you” as well as two selected tracks from Boris’ Kraut-Hop project “Grüün” (btw, the Grüün – Kraut-Hop LP will be released soon). The whole compilation is an excellent guide through some of germany’s most interesting hiphop acts. Definately worth a listen!

…So luckily, grandma wasn’t right about everything she used to say. But who knows, had she known this compilation, she might have been more able to appreciate the things that life just gives to you for free…

Press and Blog Feedback

“A new stellar release from iDEOLOGY (possibly the best netlabel currently?). This time rounds its European Hop Hop at its finest.”
Robot Disco Express

Dick!

“A phat Hip Hop Package. With “Because Best Things Are Free” Ideology Netlabel delivers a heavy and delicate compilation. Next to amusing german rhymes, laid-back Hip Hop-instrumentals twinkle in the afternoon sun. Next to well-known netaudio-artists like Comfort Fit, Gringo Starr and the freaks from the Colonius Monk Collective you listen to new heroes like Niwa or Pestopan.

I have to admit, that Ideology Netlabel distributes some of the best downbeat and hip hop-instrumentals in the last couple of months. Alternative and skillful productions lift this compilation up and make it one of my favorite samplers this month.

What’s amazing about this little diamond, is the fact, that we stumble upon disco-inspired tracks like “When she looked at me (i saw her wondering)” from Niwa into techy Hip Hop-Beats produced by Comfort Fit. But wait, there are some real stompers round the corner: After we left the “Time Machine” we walk through a city full of noise. While the jackhammer pumps, Pestopan lets his smiling monster-track “Clgn Sght Hrng” loose. Five Stars, lots of medals and “Thank You’s!” to the musicians for this delicate Hip Hop package!”

and many others.

This is Comfort Fit’s long awaited first release on the Swedish Brandy label. On this seven track ep you will find a broad perspective of sounds and flavours ranging from hip hop, street soul, beats to nu- jazz, with excellent vocal contributions by Mercury Waters (Washington DC, spitkickers.com), Blaktroniks (Oakland California) and Nicole Hadfield (Groove Guerilla). These cripsy beats are ripe with thumping funk and jazz influences, sample wizardry and daring shuffles. Composed with the help of unique sound plugins which were especially programmed to measure Comfort Fit’s needs and wishes, we think the chances aren’t bad that you’ll fall for the unique sound signature, bounce and elegance of this tight hip hop production. Like the best mixtapes this thing plays even strongly as a whole – no matter if it’s about classic jazz impressions like Miles of Smiles, scarily deep intergalactic grooves as in Astro Dancin´or the hip hop bomb State of Mind, all the tracks are locked together closely.

The Never Look Back EP is more than just beat fodder for your next mixtape, “it’s a very personal diary of mine. I feel music is my natural form of expression, not words”, as Comfort Fit says. “It is very important for me to escape from the noise pollution of the cities and from the media hypes going on. I’d rather create my own”. This is the perfect record for the leftfield, opendminded dj´s and electronic music lovers.

Comfort Fit has been collecting synthesizers and records since a very young age, even though his first hip hop beats are only ten years old now. His influences are different than the usual jazz/ funk/ soul/ disco references most Hip hop producers name. Comfort Fit’s hip hop is not just rooted in his love for jazz and funk but especially in the techno of the early 90s. He decided to stop his dj career a few years ago in order to concentrate on the music production, but his dj perspective on music is still present in his beats. After all he’s been standing behind the turntables half of his life now, having gained his first club residency and radio experiences with merely 13 (!) years of age. Alot has changed in Comfort Fit’s life since his first album “Museum” was released on Megahertz Records 2001. But despite all the action he has managed to release some critically acclaimed EPs and the masterpiece “Forget and remember” LP via Tokyo Dawn Records (free download!) , as well as remixes for Universal Jazz and other labels. His music is now even being used in the commercials of a many corporation like Mercedes Benz, Chevrolet and Motorola. He is now releasing some new sonic-bombs on the labels swedish brandy, mental records and others.

Mercury Waters

Mercury Waters brings about a more personal and integrity marred sound. A product of the Washington D.C. metro area, Mercury Waters’ music can be best described as wizardry. A mixture of revealing and complex lyrical imagery, with a no holds barred, anything goes production theme. Crediting musical influences from swamp-water blues to modern jungle and broken beat rhythms, Mercury Waters paints pictures on a sound canvas too bright and bold to be denied. Making music since the age of 12, gives this 24 year old artist a keen, clearcut sense of what his vision should be. Music that makes you think, feel and become a part of it.

He is a published poet through www.poetry.com’s yearly anthology. Presented with the Editor’s Choice Award and chosen as one of the best poets of 2003. Also Mercury Waters is a featured artist on www.chrion-inc.com and was included on the second volume of The Alpha Project presented by www.alphabeats.com home of The Battle of the Beats. He has also appeared on the Battle Mode album by indie dutch superstars, The Proov. Even given a nod by De La Soul on the Grind Date album, as well as being featured on The Bootleg Next Spit online mixtapes offered by Spitkicker.com.

Nicole Hadfield

Nicole Hadfield born and raised in Swaziland arrived in Mannheim, Germany in 1999 and had planned to be staying with her cousin for a year after finishing her 12th grade of high school in South Africa. Little did she know, she would be introduced to a whole new fantastic world…MUSIC!

A few months later she met a pianist by the name of Peter Troester, who basically taught her what potential she has and how to use it. Nicole and Peter formed a Jazz trio with a very talented young lady by the name of Ellen Chroni. They played at small functions, wrote and produced a few songs together. In the year 2000 Nicole decided that she needed to move to another level and through a mutual friend, met Rapper Pal One who was at the time in a band called Groove guerrilla, a funk band that mostly played Maceo Parker cover songs. They were looking for a singer so Nicole went for a short audition and the band knew for sure that she was the one they were looking for. This funk world was very new to her but she felt at home after a few months

and learned how to heat up the crowd and became a new born, power entertainer! During that year, the band decided to start writing and producing their own music and became familiar with the “Logic World” In summer 2000 Groove Guerrilla won the John Lennon Talent Award show with the first song they wrote called Broadway and after that never stopped creating their own sound. Since then, they have played at events like the MTV Campus invasion; Rock am Ring, Rock im Park, Nuke Festival and released two singles in with music videos in 2004/05 through EMI/BMG and an album. They have played on huge stages and supported bands like Manu Chao, Xavier Naidoo, Gentleman, Joe Cocker, The Streets and many more.

Blaktroniks

EDD DEE PEE was born in Detroit Michigan. He grew up near Motown before moving to Southern California. He has studied music since he was six years old. As a young child he had a desire to play the saxophone. even though his instrument was too heavy for him to hold up and play without sitting it on the case. His parents relocated to California . LA was a huge influence to him as a young teen.

EDD DEE PEE lived in Inglewood and South Central, and would carry his tenor sax a couple of miles to school . At the time his goal was to become first chair, and finish junior high and join the Inglewood High marching band. But as a eighth grader, he move with his family to Northern California. Continuing with his musical studies at Middle School, he was lucky enough to play for President Reagan, Queen Elizabeth, and Mayor Diane Feinstein. He advance to THE SCHOOL OF THE ARTS in high school. He Studied with Jazz Great Eddie Marshall, Mr. Shied and symphony woodwind musician Alan Shackney. As an young adult EDD had embraced the hip hop culture for several years. It was a innocent fresh new art form that belong to the streets. He did what most kids who love hip hop in those days did religiously. He was a card carrying member of a freestyle (upper room) club too.

Over the years the years EDD has developed skills in music productions. as well as visual arts. He replaced the sax with a electric bass guitar. He has learn through trial and error how to become a hard working independent recording artist with a discography trail from Germany to Japan and anywhere in-between. His mentor in the mid nineties was Marcel East, of the jazz group, “FOUR PLAY”. His spoken words was on a EP vynel recording, with Oakland artist D’Wayne Wiggins. Since 2000 blaktroniks has recorded with MOVING RECORDS and affiliated label TOKYODAWN RECORDINGS, (a 2003 German Grammy Award nominated label) . Oddly enough, he never sent a major label a demo or competed in talent shows. In 1996 he joined forces with another talented composer named Badi. And formed the group known today as BLAKTRONIKS. They have calibrated with many artist aloneg the way. And work with a assortment of labels (DKIM, MOVING, TOKYODAWN, REFLECTIVE, SOURCE, MOODS AND GROOVE, RUBYAHT etc.

English reviews

“Listen. Boris Mezga is turning it on it’s head. Under the guise ‘Comfort Fit’, the “Forget And Remember” LP is about to drop on tokyodawnrecords.com, full of abstract jazz, techno influenced, crossover, sampledelica wizardry. They call it tight, bouncey, elegant hip hop; we call it future music. It’s cutting a new path, hypnotic and rocking every corner. Somewhere between SA-RA and Bugz in the Attic and then some. “Miles of Smiles” is melodica modal jazz, “Take A Look” just hits that dub-bass-Theo Parrish spot every time. Boris, now in his 20’s, had his first club residency at 13 years old! An avid collector of synthesizers and vinyl, he creates a natural cross-genre form of music uninfluenced by media hype or city trends. Not to be confused with “just another beatz lp”, “Forget and Remember” is here now and will still sound fresh in 2010.” Straight No Chaser – UK

„Comfort Fit graced us with a chock full album of thoroughly souled hiphop beats. 20, yup, 20 tracks of what you’re used to from TDR, a whole lotta soul, a bit jazz, retro hiphop beats and a slice of techno even. All that produced and mastered to perfection with a lovely set of covers. Most of the tracks are instrumental beats but Blaktroniks made a vocal appearance on Freeze The Cut and Something To Do, as did Mercury Waters on She Knows Me Now. Ranging from jazz tributes, 70’s grooves, straight up hiphop bouncers and even love songs, Comfort Fit put out a diverse yet tight, well rounded out release.” .phonq

“There is such a lot of fantastic hiphop around at the moment, its great to hear an album full of mostly instrumental beats. Written and produced by Boris Mezga from Stuttgart, he is one name you will need to keep an eye out for in the future. Within the first few tracks you can see Boris is being influenced by the right kind of producers; from Madlib to Sa-Ra, but creating his own sound. With twenty tracks totalling over 70 minutes, this is a joy to listen to.” basic soul

The creative apartheid of hip-hop and house music is tired. Built around collective misunderstandings—that house music is a sell-out or gay; that hip-hop is gangster or misogynistic—they miss a critical fact. Hip-hop and house music came from the same place, DJs rocking disco records. Stuttgart-based producer Boris Mezga knows. His second album as Comfort Fit explores the grey area between solid boom bap hip-hop and slow-mo house grooves. The overlapping area is hot with producers and music fans right now. Although undoubtedly boosted by the rise of ‘chill-out’ CDs, the music produced has nothing to do with the commercial imperatives of another new bar. Instead, from Theo Parrish through to DJ Zeph, via Rae & Christian, the results are beautifully stoned soul music. And with the likes of Jazzanova’s Sonarkollektiv and Bugz In The Attic’s West London scene melding hip-hop, house, techno, and drum’n'bass into a whole new kind of jazz dance, the scene is set for a next step forward. This isn’t the step forward, but having started DJing at 13, Mezga is well placed to make that step. It shows in the studied funk of the beats, his expert use of samples and most of all in the warm vibe. However, oddly
enough, for a hip-hop producer, it was the stark lines of mid-nineties techno that captured his imagination early on. British electro label Clear is an obvious comparison. Although they have now moved into ambience and abstract electronics (and a name-change to Defocus), artists like Reflection, Jake Slazenger, and Dr.Rockit obviously affected his sound. Like them, Mezga undoes the knots of his hip-hop and techno influences and carefully brushes them out, before tying his own special bows.

Forget and Remember kicks off with “Planetary Picknick”’s sparse beat, the four am vibe complemented by a spacey synth. It’s a perfect introduction to the album, Mezga gradually fills the space between the beats; first a lazy rhythm, then a distorted melody swirls and is joined by a metallic bassline. Sometimes it is a little too sparse. “As Pure As Possible” reminds me of Herbert’s Wishmountain or Dr Rockit projects, and like them, its warehouse floor rhythm can be a little empty, a little too repetitive. But then again, I enjoy those Herbert tracks more every time I hear them. Mezga invited a several guests into the studio on Forget and Remember. The first appears just three tracks in on the icy “Freeze the Cut.” Orlando MC Blaktronics is no stranger to working with electronic producers; his last release saw collaborations with Domu and Mike Grant. Here he rides the Antipop-style groove with an understated, almost mumbled paean to the joys of downloaded beats: “If I unzip this would you download that? / Would you make a new folder just to hold this track?” ”She Knows Me Now” is closer to Fat Jon and Panda One’s releases on Counterflow. Mad jazz tangents, odd little helium vocals ala Quasimodo, and a solid rhyme from Washington rapper Mercury Waters. Waters’ latest album sees collaborations with the Last Poets, John Legend, and Kanye West, so either he’s got lots of money or he’s very good. He’s good here, though the track is claustrophobic—bells, beats, acid bassline wiggles—it works, but only just. Stylus

“Boris Mezga from Stuttgart/Southern Germany is a beat maniac. You can hear this if you listen to his LP “Forget and Remember”. In the tradition of Dj Shadows “Entroducing” he is able to put his well-chosen samples on a landscape of jazzy and always laid back beat structures. You can feel the connection to hiphop and the downbeats from the beginning of the 90s where Mo’Wax and Ninja Tune were the innovative labels on the map. But it isn’t just a homage to these sounds from the past. For example “Thursday is thursty” could be a track on the new Dimlite Lp on Sonar Kollektiv. Mezga is able to build a bridge between the old and the new. It is all a kind of nostalgic and very pleasantly. Did you like the worlds of Mighty Bob and DJ Krush? You have to check that records immediately. Very nice one. Please more of it. The summer needs such music to chill.” COUCHSURFER.DE

„TDR is a german label you should keep an eye on. This label releases quite alot of dope stuff, primaily on the internet and they do this even for free. (what? Wait a minute!) Yes, you read that right! And trust us is we say it’s good quality… This brings us to the album of the week.
Forget and Remember LP is the title of the debutalbum by Boris Mezga under the name ‘Comfort fit’. With 20 tracks and about 71 minutes of quality electronic hiphop, it’s filled to the edge. It’s a true sample fest with original sounds and kicks & snares that come so late that you wonder if you’ll be able to catch your last train. This gives Forget and Remember a catching relaxed flow. Most tracks are instrumentals, but every now and then some rhymes appear. A pity is that the producer has a love to sometimes fool around with filters and effects, which can make it sound corny from time to time. But besides that, it’s a descent album with a style that sounds like Prefuse73 with a chill pill or Dimlite/Jneiro Jarel with some more pepper up his behind. Concluding, this is an interesting record and we’re dutch so free shit is always interesting to get. So check www.tokyodawnrecords.com and download this. I promise you you’ll find this one dope” no breaks
